The restoration and regularisation of a much-loved community pub and brewhouse in Cumbria.

The Prince of Wales Pub is a critical and central community asset at the heart of a small hamlet in Cumbria. IDK worked to understand the unique character, quality and success of the institution, and redesigned the pub using a minimal intervention and performance upgrade approach.

By reaching out to local residents and customers, and entering into dialogue with CAMRA and other invested associations, IDK compiled a body of research and intricate understanding of the pub's rich history and heritage. This informed the overall design and nuanced many smaller details – from the historic restoration of the original bar through to the inclusion of an on-site brewhouse. The scheme was strongly supported throughout its planning application to regularise and convert the pub into a fully accessible space with a financially and environmentally sustainable future.
