Exhibition design services for the Barbican gallery for the major show, Postwar Modern.
Postwar Modern explored the art produced in Britain in the wake of cataclysmic war. With certainty gone and aftershocks continuing, there was still hope for a better future. These conditions gave rise to an incredible richness of imagery, forms and materials in the years that followed.
The project was commissioned and managed by the Barbican Exhibition team with IDK providing full exhibition design services. Working with the diverse and unique collection required early-stage involvement with the installation, curatorial and collections teams to fully understand access restrictions and the optimum display and storage conditions for the artefacts and pieces.
Featuring 48 artists and over 200 works of painting, sculpture, photography, collage and installation across the Barbican galleries, and accompanied by a series of tours, talks, screenings and immersive display projections, the exhibition design responded to the complexity of the show by prioritising the audience journey and viewing experience.
