A primitive shelter made of five slabs of stone that collide to form a sculptural bothy.
Inspired by stone quoits and Da Sneck Ida Smaalie, the Stone Bothy provides the fundamental human comforts of warmth and shelter. Appearing coincidental, almost accidental, the slabs are precisely positioned to deliver vital shelter in an exposed and remote location. A single steel chimney projects as an irreverent invitation to guests.
Made from local material borrowed and returned to the immediate landscape, the structure provides moments of protection and opening. The form invites fire in its hearth, provides water collected from the rain, features protective windbreaks and creates shelter with a roof slab. A cut shelf provides a map reading surface, an angled slab a boot drying spot, with mug alcoves and nooks for drying clothes and keeping out of the rain. Stone Bothy is fully functional in all weather, never used in the same way, and stands as a reliable landmark for escape, comfort, connection and enjoyment.
